Missouri Overview

Missouri, a state of the Midwest, USA; 180,546 km2, 6.0 million residents (2011), of which 83% are white. Capital: Jefferson City. Enlisted in the Union in 1821 as the 24th State. Nickname: The Show Me State. Check searchforpublicschools for public primary and high schools in Missouri.

After a major European immigration in the 1800s. and a smaller wave of black migrants from the southern states (circa 1940-60), especially to metropolitan areas, Missouri has had only a small population growth. Nearly two-thirds of the population lives in the million cities of St. Louis (with border with Illinois) and Kansas City (with border with Kansas). The former agricultural state today has a large industrial sector and a broad-based economy. The largest industries include the automotive, aerospace and fast-growing data industries. The industries are concentrated to Kansas City and to St. Louis. Louis, who holds the headquarters of i.a. McDonnell Douglas, Monsanto Chemicals, General Dynamics and the world’s largest brewery, Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser). Agricultural production remains high, with beef and pork, dairy products and wheat, soybeans, maize and other fodder plants. The approx. 100,000 farms with an average size of 116 ha cover half of the state’s land, while the forest area after clearings in the 1800s. is more than halved to less than one-third of the area. Most forests are predominantly for recreational use and are found in the Ozark region, which has large tourist visits and which supplies electricity (hydropower) and mining products (lead, zinc, limestone).

The landscape consists of gently rolling moraine plains (prairie), which in the south and south are replaced by the Ozark plateau mountain range. Most rivers are tributaries to Missouri, which intersects the landscape from west to east and runs along the Mississippi border just north of St. John’s. Louis. The climate is rainy and the mainland with cool winters and hot summers. Situations with extreme weather changes and tornadoes occur frequently, and Missouri has been hit several times, most recently in 1993. The violent natural phenomena also include the New Madrid 1811-12 earthquakes, the strongest recorded in the United States.

French settlers, who came from Illinois to the north, built Sainte Geneviève on the west Mississippi in 1735, and in the 1760s St. Louis, which became an important starting point for further settlements westward when the area as part of the Louisiana acquisition in 1803 came under the United States. In the battle over the spread of slavery to the west, in 1820, Congress adopted the so-called Missouri Compromise, which allowed the area’s inclusion as a slave state in the United States the following year; However, slavery was of limited importance in Missouri, which remained in the Union during the American Civil War 1861-65.
