A study – the New York Times recently reported – focused on the breasts of the marathon. Even wearing a bra, a majority of racers feel pain in training or in competition. Are our Sports Bras completely reviewing?
A displacement of the breasts that can go up to 20cm…
Are genesand breast pain are a common experience for women of all ages and sizes, be they sports or not. The doctor Nicola Brown and his “group of research on the health of the breasts’ (University of Portsmouth) looked at this problem during a physical activity, and conducted during registration for the marathon in London 2012 an anonymous survey of 1300 runners, questioning them about their possible chest pain.
We could question the interest of a study looking at the breasts of the marathon so much conventional wisdom convey the image of a thin runner, androgynous and without chest (in the image of the elites in the lead). Yet the survey conducted by a2zdirectory shows that the London marathon includes a huge diversity of female morphologies: not less than 56 different sizes of bras have been identified, the Cup AA HH Cup, with chest towers ranging from 71 to 101 cm, for an average weight of 67 kg.
All sizes and shapes of breasts are possibly overdue
The practice of running an influence on the chest, just as it affects every tissue of the human body. But given the weight of a breast and its grip on a close anatomical support, the oscillations of it are important and deserve that science is interested: motion capture made by researchers demonstrate an amplitude up to 20 cm either vertically, laterally, or back and forth!
Well that 90% of the interviewed Marathon reported wearing a bra even during their sport, nearly one-third reported chest pains, the most common being related to hormonal changes generated by the menstrual cycles. But if the impact of pain is stronger among women in the cups – more than F cups half or more related frequent suffering -, she did not spare provided small breasts: regular pain are also mentioned by 25% of the runners wearing caps A or less.
Four tips to better choose his running bra
The researchers were especially struck by the fact that even with a sports bra, the practice of running induced or worsened those suffering from chest. And that nearly a quarter of the runners reduced the intensity of his training when the breasts were sore – for example by walking instead of running. Some avoided even any exercise during critical periods.
This study is the first formally validating a problem of quality of life and training of women in sports with a painful chest.
She proves the importance and relevance of the research on the treatment of pain and the need to build upon to improve the development and design of the Sports Bras. The research on the breast health group published a guide online, that can be summarized in four points needed in the choice of an optimal running bra:
1) band under-chest
It is the most important element. She must be comfortable without being loose (two fingers should slip to the maximum under the belt, otherwise choose a tour of lower back), stapling must be tight to the wider during the first test, because the elastic band will relax with time & washes.
It must fully cover the chest without cutting (if the breast is cut or compressed prefer a cap at the top), and should not pucker (in this case choose a cap underneath).
Prefer them wide and comfortable, if possible padded, to not cut the shoulder and enough farms so that they do not relax over 2.5 cm if you shoot. The back should be “swimmer”, i.e. the straps cross or tightened for better support.
For the cups, the secret is in the structure and frame. Even in a sports bra: soft, well protected, seamlessly following the contour of the breast without cutting it or compress the flesh at the ends.
