Historical review

Founded in May 1953, the Catholic University of Petrópolis was the first higher education institution created in the city of Petrópolis. It began with the opening of some modest Petropolitan Catholic Faculties, at the initiative of the then diocesan bishop Dom Manoel Pedro da Cunha Cintra. The first course offered by the new institution was Law, started in 1954 in the neighborhood called Retiro. In 1956, after the acquisition of an emblematic building where a hotel operated for a long time, the famous Hotel Orleans, on Barão do Amazonas street, the faculties of Philosophy, Science and Letters and, later, of Industrial Engineering were also created.

In 1961, the merger of the three faculties resulted in the birth of the Catholic University of Petrópolis. The institution was recognized by Decree 383, of December 20, 1961, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on December 21, 1961. The university was solemnly installed on March 11, 1962 and immediately experienced a strong expansion, with the opening of new courses.

At the end of the 1960s, the university acquired the facilities of Notre Dame de Sion College, on Benjamín Constant Street, and brought all its administration and a large part of its students to that campus. On the new campus, he founded the College of Application, whose purpose was to promote stays and research projects of the Faculty of Education Sciences.

The university went through great changes, highlighting the acquisition of the first computer in 1974, with the installation of the Data Processing Center and the inauguration of the Physical Education Center, in 1976. The 1980s brought the conquest of the Radio UCP FM concession and later, the Don Manoel Pedro da Cuña Cintra Cultural Foundation. The 90’s marked the recognition of the university throughout the community. Among the important projects that had the participation of the institution are the signing of an agreement between the university and the City Council for the revitalization of the historic center of Petrópolis and the integration of the university into the Petrópolis-Tecnópolis project.

Today the UCP, which, in its more than 60 years of history, has already trained more than 25,000 professionals in various areas, offers 39 undergraduate courses, in addition to other bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate courses.
